Is autonomous quality control possible?

 

100% quality control of all workpieces immediately after production is often very costly and not feasible directly on measuring machines due to contaminants such as chips or oil.

 

For downstream quality inspection, the workpieces are first cleaned, dried, and tempered before they can be measured. This leads to a work-in-progress inventory of components and significant delays until the measurement results are available. Typically, this measuring process, including logistics and part preparation, is many times slower than the actual manufacturing process (10 to 1,000 times slower). Therefore, in practice, only 0.1–1% of workpieces can be economically inspected.

 

To overcome these challenges, companies often resort to workarounds: manual intermediate inspections by employees using handheld measuring devices or the use of specially developed automated testing machines to check critical dimensions.
